Readers Reponse 2

The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes
Bill Watterson
p.1-p.200
Rating: N/A

Finally, I find myself a proud owner of a treasury of one the best comics in the world. I can't really convey how wonderful the world of Calvin and Hobbes is in words, but I'll try. For those of you who haven't experienced the utter brilliance of Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin is an articulate, whiny, annoying, smart 6-year old that is probably one of the most hilarious, best fictional characters ever encountered. Hobbes is his stuffed tiger, who walks and talks when Calvin is with him, acting as his ever faithful companion, but is inanimate around others. It is not explained if Hobbes is a magical tiger who comes to life or whether Hobbes' actions and words are imagined by Calvin, nor does it matter. The mix of Calvin and Hobbes' antics, personalities, and interactions with other characters are incredibly funny, and are a critique of the insanities that go on everyday in the real world. They make you see the authors views incredibly clearly, and conveys the basic flaws with common events. For example, here is one of the more serious strips that gives you something to think about:
Some strips are very emotional in their own way, and it's incredible how the strips draw you in and make you feel so connected to the characters. Many are visual metaphors, and engage you more than the average comic. But then again, Calvin and Hobbes never was the average comic.
